Wildfire Smoke & Indoor Air: A Practical Guide

Portable air cleaners and high-efficiency HVAC filters can help reduce smoke particles indoors. Filtration does not remove every pollutant or make a home smoke-proof.

Start with the right filtration

  • Choose a portable air cleaner sized for the room. EPA recommends a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet, and a CARB-certified device that produces little or no ozone. Run it continuously on the highest setting you can tolerate.
  • For central HVAC, consider MERV 13 or higher only if your system supports it. Check the equipment manual or consult an HVAC professional about filter fit, airflow and fresh-air intake settings.
  • Keep windows and doors closed while smoke is present, provided you can remain safely cool. Avoid indoor smoke sources such as candles and smoking. Follow local air-quality and emergency instructions.
  • Follow your device's maintenance instructions. Smoke can dirty filters faster; replace dirty filters sooner when needed rather than relying on a fixed smoke-event interval.
